First post

I had a thought... My work blog is for my work, and as such is really just for telling the world what we are up to. I didn't have a place where I could make my own thoughts public.

So.... Architect-b is my take on the world. Why architect-b? Long story but here is the short version:

I have been having an on and off conversation with some people (who shall remain nameless) about the state of the profession and I have become increasingly concerned about architects who either over-intellectualize the profession or treat it as if it its the highest form of art. I am sick of architects who think that their primary function is to confuse and bamboozle people with visual tricks. I really don't like iconic architecture, to me it is the ultimate in self-congratulation and denies the core idea that the building should respond to users needs, site conditions and location.

Architect-b is my way of saying that I'm not trying to be Architect-a; I don't want to be the main object of my buildings. I teach my students to think of their involvement with the building as fleeting and heroic. If a building stands for 100 years and the architect took two years to design it, the involvement is only 2%.

So there it is. I don't expect anyone to read this blog, god knows there are enough crackpots spouting wisdom on the net to mean that I will remain invisible. If you do find this blog, and find it interesting, please comment.
